Samuel Thomas Miles left Hopkinsville in 1837 and worked his way on a steamboat up the Ohio River to Cincinnati.  He then crossed the River to Newport and walked out to Alexandria, having no definite object in going there.  He did any odd jobs available and finally worked up a good tailoring business.

He bought a farm two miles north of Alexandria on which he built a house.  When he had finished paying for the land and the house he was married.  Upon hearing that the children of his brother, Charles had become orphaned, he went down and got them, bringing them home to raise with his own six children.  He wanted to have all of the children receive a good education and as the nearest "good" school available was the Pettit School at Cold Spring, he bought a bus to get them there and back home.

He secured a contract to carry the mail between Alexandria and Newport, also carrying passengers, express, etc.  For a time he was a postmaster in Covington.  He and his wife are buried in Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati.
