SOLDIER IS DEAD OF INFLUENZA


John C Maisch, who made his home with his aunt, Mrs. Wm P Schulenberg, 212 E Sixth st. Newport, has died at Campbell Taylor Ky. a victim of influenza.

The soldier, 29 years old, had been in the army four weeks. He was rejected by the army and navy and when he came up for examination before the Newport Selective Service Board also was rejected. He went to a hospital and underwent a serious surgical operation and, appearing before Dr. John Todd, medical advisor of the board, asked for re-examination. He passed and was sent to Camp Taylor.

He was taken ill last week. Reports from the camp indicated he was on the road to recovery. His death came as a shock to his friends. Maisch was a member of Eden Park Council, Junior Order of American Mechanics. The body will be sent to Newport for burial.

The body of John Maisch, private, a nephew of Mrs. W P Schulenberg, who died at Camp Taylor, Ky. of Spanish influenza, arrived in Newport Friday and was taken to the home of his aunt, 212 E Sixth st. Newport. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon. Services will be private.

The body will be buried in Evergreen Cemetery.

Due to some misunderstanding among army officials at Camp Zachary Taylor, Ky. the body of John Maisch, private in the 159th Depot Brigade, who died of Spanish influenza, did not arrive at the home of his aunt, Mrs. W P Schulenberg, 212 E Sixth st. Newport, Friday. The body was scheduled to arrive late Saturday.

Efforts are being made to obtain permission to held the funeral Sunday. There is a rule in Campbell co. against holding of funerals on the Sabbath. If permission cannot be obtained the funeral will be held Monday.

The body of John Maisch, private in the 159th Depot Brigade Camp Taylor, Ky. who died of Spanish influenza, was buried Monday in Evergreen Cemetery. Services were held in the home of his aunt, Mrs. William P Schulenberg, 212 E Sixth st. Newport.

Rev O Johnson Carder, rector of Grace M E Church delivered the funeral oration. Both branches of he country's service were represented. Four men, two each from the army and navy acted as pallbearers.
