NEWPORT

A young German named John Ludtman went into the Licking River, a short distance above Livzey's saw mill, about seven o'clock on Sunday evening, for the purpose of bathing.  He was observed to wade into the water a short distance and then, all of a sudden, disappeared and was not seen again until his dead body was found an hour afterward.

Esquire I B Payne held an inquest on the remains.  A verdict of accidental downing was returned.  Deceased was about eighteen years of age and resided in Cincinnati.  he was employed as a salesman in a grocery store on Main street.
