John and Elizabeth Kinsella

John Kinsella was born in 1839 in Ireland, the son of Edward and Elizabeth Kinsella.  After immigrating to the United States, he married Elizabeth Blake, 24 Apr 1860 in Scioto County, Ohio.  Elizabeth was born 25 Dec 1839 in Ohio, the daughter of James and Mark Blake.  John and Elizabeth moved to Cincinnati where they are listed in the city directory and John is working as a laborer. When the Civil War started John enlisted in the Union army on 21 Sep 1861. He served with the 53rd Kentucky Infantry Company F.

John saw guard duty along the Kentucky Central Railroad between Lexington and Cincinnati. Scouting in central Kentucky and operating against guerrillas until November 1864. His unit moved to Crab Orchard, Kentucky, November 24, and joined General Stoneman and the Raid into southwest Virginia December 10–29. Near Marion, Virginia, December 17–18. Saltville, Virginia, December 20–21. He participated in the capture and destruction of salt works, and operated against guerrillas at various points in Kentucky by detachments until September 1865.  John mustered out 15 Sep 1865.

John filed for a pension from the government for his service on 8 Mar 1889 while living in Newport.  However, he died 30 June 1890 in Newport and his wife filed as his widow on 15 July 1890.  John was buried in St Joseph New Cemetery. Elizabeth died 28 Oct 1919 in Newport and was buried in St Joseph New Cemetery in Cincinnati.
