Services were being arranged Saturday for John Girty Hewling one time resident of Ft Thomas, who found the headless body of Pearl Bryan on the farm of John B Lock, near Ft Thomas Feb 1, 1896, touching off a news story that has almost become legend in Northern Kentucky. Mr. Hewling died Friday at the Veterans Hospital in Dayton O. He was 74.

Mr. Hewling's discovery started a chain of events which eventually led to a 24 day trial and the hanging of two Cincinnati students of dentistry, Scott Jackson and Alonzo Walling.

He leaves his widow, Mrs. Emma Hewling, Cincinnati; four sons, J Lawrence, past commander of James Wallace Costigan Post, American Legion, Newport and Frank, both of Ft Thomas and Richard widely known athlete and John Hewling Jr. both of Newport; a daughter, Mrs. Pauline Klotzback, president of the Newport High School Parent Teachers Association; four sisters, Miss Sue Hewling, Mrs. Nellie Krohn and Mrs. Sadie Gaynor, all of Newport and Mrs. Mattie Martin, Ft Thomas; a brother, Joseph, Ft Thomas and five grandchildren.

The Radel funeral home, Price Hill, is in charge of arrangements.
