The Navy's third highest decoration, the Navy Cross has been awarded posthumously a Ft Thomas dive bomber pilot for "extraordinary heroism" displayed in an attack on a Jap aircraft carrier in the battle of the Philippines Oct 25, 1944. The award was made Lt. Junior Grade John Storrs Foote, son of Electra Storrs Foote, of 2 S Ft Thomas avenue, Ft Thomas.

The flyer lost his life Nov 11 when on a mission from the aircraft carrier, USS Essex. The citation accompanying the Navy Cross said: "Launched at down from his parent carrier when the northern prong of the Japanese fleet swung from a southeasterly to a northerly course in an effort to escape the powerful units of our Third Fleet. Lt. Foote took off under extremely adverse weather conditions in pursuit of the enemy task force. With a Japanese aircraft carrier of the Shokaku class as his target, he skillfully maneuvered through the deadly rain of bursting ant-aircraft fire in company with other planes of his group, plunged on the enemy disposition with determined aggressiveness and struck furiously, scoring a direct hit on a hostile carrier. Lt. Foote defied the persistent anti-aircraft fire of the entire Japanese task force to execute his bold attack and contributed essentially to the sinking of a vital Japanese warship."

Lt. Foote has been awarded the Air Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster. He had completed 15 missions. The flyer entered the Navy September 1942 and had been overseas since February 1944. He was an alumnus of Highlands High School.
