MANY WITNESSES SOUGHT
Warrants to Follow Death of John Flaherty, Bullet Victim
Relatives of John Flaherty, 38 years old, of 5010 Hackberry street, Clerk of the Juvenile Division of the Court of Domestic Relations, may be asked by Newport and Campbell County Ky. officials to sign warrants for the arrest of several persons. It was announced yesterday following an investigation of Flaherty's death at Speers Hospital, Dayton Ky. as a result of a bullet wound which he sustained New Year's Eve at Ye Old Kentucky Castle, near Newport.
County Detective Edward Hamilton and Deputy
Sheriff Edward Howe yesterday visited the home of Patrick Flaherty, 3010
Hackberry street, former Fire Captain, father of John Flaherty, during the
investigation of the case. They said they had a list of 24 persons who are
said to have been witnesses of the fight at the inn, during which Flaherty was
wounded.
County Attorney Blaine McLaughlin provided Coroner Walter R Hughes with the
names of the following persons, who they say were at the inn; Mr. and Mrs. Alex
McCabe, 2834 Woodburn avenue, Walnut Hills; George Huglow, 9597 Hackberry
street; Sam Boss 217 Crescent place, Walnut Hills; William Clary, 1642 Brewater
avenue; E J McGrann, Woodburn avenue; Charles Gullenstein, 2800 Rhensford
street; Leonard Schroeder, 2807 Woodlawn avenue; Edward Buck, Myrtle avenue; Mr.
and Mrs. John Holmes, 2610 Moormann avenue; Edward Huglaw, 2527 Hackberry
street; Edward Loughend, Goodman avenue; Cliff Wirthlin, Woodburn avenue; Leslie
Springmeter and Edward Costello, Walnut Hills.
County officials say no ante-mortem statement was obtained by them from Flaherty, though he had remained conscious until just before his death. He told several persons he had been wounded by "a fat bartender" officials say. Several friends of Flaherty said yesterday he had given to a physician the name of the person who fired the shot with the understanding the name was to be made public only in case of his death.
Coroner Hughes said he will impanel a Coroner's jury to examine witnesses. A police officer who failed to make an arrest in the case was dismissed from the Newport police force yesterday, but it was stated this was due to a change in administration and no charge of negligence was made against the officer.
A grand jury to be impaneled in Newport next month, is to be asked to investigate Flaherty's death. Funeral services for Flaherty will be held from St Francis de Sales Church, Cincinnati, tomorrow morning.
