Lone Campbell County Civil War Survivor Dies at
96; Was in 1939 Memorial Parade
Plans to have John Clark, 96-year-old Civil War Veteran march in
the Memorial Day parade again this year were discarded Saturday by legion
officials when death ended the career of the only surviving Civil War veteran in
Campbell County.
It was last year when Mr. Clark rode in the Newport parade, in observance of
Memorial Day. Memories were revived by Mr. Clark when he rode in the procession,
bringing back thoughts of the days in the 1860’s when the Blue and the Gray
marched in platoons and companies along this North-South “neutral area” during
the Civil War.
Mr. Clark, a lifelong resident of Campbell county (sic), died Friday night at
his home, an ancient log cabin on Licking pike, south of Newport, where he had
lived practically all his life.
He leaves his widow, Mrs. Nettie Clark; seven daughters, Mrs. Charles Fisher,
Mrs. M.L. Cummins, Mrs. Katherine Greenley, Mrs. Lula Carmack, Mrs. Mabel
Tounsley, Mrs. Florence Creenley and Mrs. Elizabeth Jones; three sons, Joseph,
Harvey and William Clark; 32 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the residence, followed by services at
Oakland Church, Grants Lick, at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery,
Grants Lick, Ky.
