Captain John Carroll

Cincinnati Commercial Tribune, Friday, 4 April 1862

Effects if the Storm, April 2, 1862-We had a hard gale last night, commencing about 2 AM, which did considerable damage at the wharf and town. The only causalty that I have learned, connected with the gale, was a sad accident that happened to Capt. Carroll of the steamer Sallie Ward.

He was making a line fast to a coal boat, when a cross tie broke, flew off and struck him just above the knee. He lay nearly two hours on the boat before his situation was discovered. His leg was set today and he is reported to be doing well. Capt. Carroll lives near Newport Ky.
