NEWPORT VETERAN DEAD
Captain John Barber, a veteran of the Civil War, died yesterday
at the Soldiers Home, Dayton O. Prior to the war he served as a first mate on a
snagboat and in 1870, became Captain of the S H Long, and remained in charge of
the boat for nearly half a century. He was engaged in the boat building business
at the foot of Fifth-st. Newport, for a number of years.
He enlisted in the 189th Ohio Infantry for the Civil War. He was 74 years of age and is survived by a widow and one son. The remains arrived here yesterday for interment.
