John Richard and Rachel Adkison

 

John Richard Adkison was born 17 March 1832 in Gallipolis, Gallia, Ohio, the son of Richard and Bridget (Carney). By the time of the 1860 census, he was in Indian Springs working for William and Susan Hasker as a laborer on their farm. He enlisted 10 Oct 1861 in the Civil War serving in the Co H 3rd Kentucky Infantry at Camp Dick Robinson under the command of Colonel Thomas Elliott Bramlett. The unit duty was at Round Stone Creek until January 1862. From there to Nashville Tenn. March 18; thence the march to Savannah Tenn. and then to Shiloh March 29. He was in Buell's Campaign in northern Alabama and in pursuit of Bragg in August. He was involved in the Battles of Stones River in December 1862; Battle of Chickamauga in September and numerous other battles. He was discharged 15 July 1865 in Lexington Ky.

He met and married Rachel Applegate in 1875 in Campbell County. She was born 19 June 1853 in Indian Springs, Ky. the daughter of Richard and Rebecca Applegate.

John R Adkinson, 84, Civil War veteran, died at his home 932 Saratoga st. Newport late Monday. He was a member of William Nelson Post, GAR, and pioneer resident. Funeral services will be held from the home Wednesday at 2 pm. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

John filed for a pension on 4 Jan 1889. He died 18 Oct 1915 in Newport and was buried in Evergreen. After his death Rachel filed for widows benefits on 11 Jan 1916. She died 5 Dec 1918 in Newport and was buried in Evergreen.
