SYNDICATE BUYS GROUND
The Cella-Aider-Tilles-Condon Western Jockey Club track to oppose
Latonia begins to look like a reality and its home will be at Glen Park, in
Campbell County, Kentucky. This point is on the main line of the C and O RR near
Melbourne and the 100 acres which were purchased yesterday by George Ehrlich are
said to be well located and suitable for an up to date race course.
The track will be accessible both by boat and trains and it is about 14 miles form the Grant Central Depot in this city to the proposed track. The St Louis syndicate took an option on this ground sometime ago only to pass it up, but yesterday Mr. Ehrlich, who manages the Newport poolroom for them, completed the deal.
Mr. Ehrlich was very enthusiastic over the proposed plant and stated that it would be open on Decoration Day, which is the date set for the opening of Latonia. He said "The grading of the new track will be started at once and 300 men will be put to work this week. Contracts will be let at once for a steel grand stand and betting shed, and the course, when completed will represent an investment of $400,000. That's as much as I know about it."
Glen Park is a few miles above Coney Island and has been used as a picnic grounds. The building of the new course means that the turf war will be prolonged and that some money will be burned up around here.
