A Purple Heart with an Oak Leaf Cluster has been awarded Jerome E
Wagner, garage operator, of 617 York street, Newport, for wounds received in
action in World War I. He was injured twice when fighting with the famed Rainbow
Division in France in 1918.
Mr. Wagner has a son, Jean Edward Wagner, torpedo man Third Class, who has been missing in action in the Pacific area since October 1943, and a daughter, Helen L Wagner, ship's cook Third Class with the WAVES.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Jerome E. Wagner (ASN: 94804), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company I, 166th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, A.E.F., near Seicheprey, France, 12 September 1918. When concentrated machine-gun fire was encountered, Corporal Wagner maneuvered his squad to a point near the nests, and, although severely wounded, continued to direct his men in silencing the guns.
