James McNamara, one of the firemen from the No 3 Hose House in
Newport, was
knocked off the ladder and fell a distance of about 12 feet, alighting on his
face and cutting a severe gash on his forehead, which required seven stitches to
sew it up.

Fireman James McNamara, of the Hose House, Newport, tendered his
resignation as a member of the department last night to Chief Waters. He gave no
reason for his action which was quite a surprise to his fellow firemen.
The Commissioners will fill his place at the regular meeting next Friday night.
