LINET MURDER-The murder of James Linet, a Newport boy at East St Louis, last week, was a cowardly affair, according to the story told here by the dead man's friends and relatives. It is also said the murderer is despondent and it is believed that he will never have a trial; that he will take his own life. One of Linet's friends, who accompanied the remains to Newport and who was an eye witness to the affair, stated the gun user J Bartelle and James Linet were friends, both barkeepers.
He stated that Bartelle had a falling out with his best girl and left her on the corner, refusing to take her home. Linet was acquainted with her and he volunteers to escort the woman home. This angered Bartelle, who started after Linet declaring he would not take her home. Whether Linet was struck he did not know, but as he fell back Bartelle fired the fatal shot. There was a pathetic scene at the hospital where the victim was taken. His brother, Peter Linet of St Louis, was notified and he hurried to the hospital. The physicians were working to save the young man's life and refused to allow the brother to enter. He stood outside the door anxious to hear some news and while there the door opened and his brother was carried past him on a stretcher. He was dead and the brother had no chance to talk to him before he died. Death ensued 35 minutes after the shooting occurred.
It seems that Linet was well liked in East St Louise and about a dozen of his friends came here to attend the funeral.
