Kentucky Post, Wednesday, 18 March 1903, page 3
An attempt at suicide was made by James Hise, 57, of 216 East Third Street, Newport Ky. Wedensday morning. He gashed his throat three times. Hise, who is a vetern of the Civil War, has been drinking heavily and has been despondent. Several times he has threatened suicide.
Wednesay morning he was in an unusally ugly mood and drove his wife out of the house about 9 am. She ran screaming into the yard. Hise then seized a razor and cut himself. Returning to the house, the wife found a trail of blood leadingout through the back door and following it, came upon her husband sitting on the porch with a bloody hankerchief around his neck.
Dr. Shaler Berry, who was called, said that while the wounds are dangerous, they are not fatal.
