James Hafer, 82, of 640 S Ft Thomas avenue, Ft Thomas, veteran riverman, died of a heart attack at his home Thursday, according to members of the Ft Thomas life squad who have him oxygen for more than an hour in an effort to revive him.
Mr. Hafer, who served as engineer on steamboats plying the Ohio River for many years, constructed steamboats as a hobby and displayed them in public places in Newport and Cincinnati. Prior to his retirement a year ago, Mr. Hafer was employed at the Wadsworth Watch Case Co. Dayton, as chief maintenanceman, for 25 years. He also owned and operated the Standard Tool Works, Saratoga street, Newport, until five years ago.
A native of Ripley, Ohio, he lived in northern Kentucky 45 years, moving to Ft Thomas after making his home in Newport 40 years. He leaves two daughters, Miss Rose Hafer, Ft Thomas and Mrs. Lillian Geiser, Mariemont; one son Fred, Newport and two grandchildren.
Arrangements for the funeral are being completed by the Dobbling funeral home, Ft Thomas.
