James Alexander, 71, veteran army man and retired policeman, died suddenly Sunday at his home, 21 Court pl. Newport, following a heart attack. Mr. Alexander became ill shortly after he and his wife, Mrs. Aneta returned home after spending most of the day outdoors. The Newport Life Saving Squad was summoned and when they arrived he was dead.
Mr. Alexander served as a sergeant in Troop A, Fourth Company, US Army, for more than 30 years. During his long army career he saw action nd the Spanish American War. He ws awarded more than 15 medals for bravery, including a Distinguished Service Cross for bravery in the Philippine Insurrection. He was seriously wounded twice in the latter battle.
After his retirement from the army, he served as chief of police at the Andrews Steel Mill, Newport. He retired five years ago. He was a brother in law of Blaine McLaughlin, Newport attorney. Besides his widow, he leaves one sister, Mrs. Ada Gibson, Dayton O. Funeral services have not been completed.

Under terms of the will of James Alexander, 21 Court pl. Newport, Spanish War veteran, probated Monday by Judge Conrad G Matz in Campbell co. Court, he leaves his entire estate to his widow, Edna.
