Jake Wagner

Kentucky Post, Tuesday, 28 May 1907, page 5

Jake Wagner, a mute, was the only culprit to face Judge Hawkins in the Newport Police Court today. Wagner, who is a character about Newport, accumulated a jag yesterday that got him in bad. He tried to clean out the One's engine house, and became so disorderly, word was telephoned Police Headquarters. Patrolman Benke responded and escorted Wagner to jail.

In court Wagner's sign talk was a puzzle to Judge Hawkins and ex-fireman Ben Graham was sworn in as interpreter. Graham seemed to understand what Wagner "didn't say". At least Judge Hawkins thought so and after giving Graham a vote of thanks for his services, fined Wagner $1 and costs which he paid and was released.
