Philip Watson, the colored man who murdered his wife by braining her, will expiate his crime on the scaffold tomorrow afternoon. The time has not yet been fixed by Sheriff Lowe, who is to perform the unpleasant duty, with the assistance of Jailer Schwartz of Newport.

At 1 am this morning Jailer Schwartz of Newport, discovered that Ben Dunkly and Bird Rhainook had worked an iron bar from their bed and made a hole two feet square in the floor of their cell and were attempting an escape by the same method used last Spring by Fenton. These men were sentenced on Saturday for robbery.

The Democratic City Convention assembled last night in Eclipse Hall, Newport and nominated a full ticket for the October election. For jailer, the first ballot resulted: John Schwartz, the present incumbent, 22; James Wallace, 8. Schwartz declared nominated.
