Jailer John Davis
Cincinnati Enquirer, Wednesday, 12 July 1893, page 7
The remains of Jailer John Davis were buried yesterday in a
beautiful lot in lovely Evergreen Cemetery. The funeral was the occasion of one of the
largest demonstrations that have ever occurred in Newport. Promptly at 1:30
o'clock the city officials, Board of Councilmen, School Board, Water works
Trustees and prominent citizens, headed by a brass band, proceeded to the home
of the deceased on West Seventh street.
Here, after a prayer by Rev Williamson, the funeral cortège repaired to Grace M E Church, where the beautiful funeral ceremonies of the Methodist Church assisted by the choir, were performed.
Rev C H Williamson delivered an eloquent funeral oration of the deceased. Arriving at the grave a last sad look and farewell wave was taken of the life like appearance of the dead Jailer before the clods which were to hide him forever fell upon the casket.
The floral offerings were rich and magnificent, especially that from his life long friend, John England of Covington and the Activity Club, of which he was a beloved member. The pall bearers were Messrs. John Herron, John Elm, Albert Dehner, Thomas Taylor, John Mospens, Charles Ritte, William Davis and Milton Cook.
