Charles Jacob Stahl

Murder is the charge now placed against the name of Thomas Adamson, the in Newport Police Court, instead of cutting and wounding Jacob Stahl with intent to kill. Stahl was, it is alleged, stabbed in a saloon on Front st. Aug 18 by Adamson and he lingered until Sunday morning when he expired at Speers Hospital. It was at first thought that he would recover, and Adamson was allowed to go on a $400 bail bond. John Doran was with him at the time and he was held on a charge of assault and battery.
Both men are missing and it is alleged by the police that they have been gone since the news got out that Stahl was dying. The victim resided in Bellevue. It seems that Stahl and Doran were not on good terms, and when they met in the saloon, Doran, struck at Stahl. Doran was ejected from the place and that after the fight was over, the cutting was done while Stahl's back was turned.
His nose had been bleeding from a blow and he was bending over to keep the flow of blood from falling on his clothes when the knife was pushed into his back. Coroner Dr. Higgins and Dr. Senour, of Bellevue held a post mortem over the body of Jake Stahl and are undecided as to the cause of his death. Coroner Higgins Monday reported that the liver and kidney had been penetrated by the blade, but had healed up in each instance. It may have been an after effect from the wounds that caused death.
The funeral will take place Monday at 3 pm from his late residence Front st. and Taylor av. Rev Emingholz of the German Protestant Church, conducting the services. The interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The White Owl Socials of which he was a member, will attend in a body.

Coroner M Higgins, of Newport, Wednesday afternoon rendered a verdict in the case of Jacob Stahl, who was stabbed by Thomas Adamson and later died, in which he held that death resulted from the wound inflicted. The postmortem examination was held by the Coroner and Dr. W E Senour of Bellevue and a full report was made by Dr. Senour to the Coroner.
The wounds were healed when the examination was held but other effects were found caused by the wounds in the kidney and liver, which it is said caused death. The police have so far failed to apprehend Adamson or John Doran, who was in the fight before the cutting was done.

Charged with the murder of Jacob Stahl, Thomas Adamson telephoned Ramsey Washington that he would give himself up. The killing occurred several months ago in Direl's saloon on Front st. Newport. Tom Adamson and Jack Doran went into the Stoll place and invited Jake to come in. There were some bad feeling between Doran and Stoll over work and they got into a fight. Doran struck Stoll in the nose and head. While Stoll was bending over a knife was plunged into his back and Adamson is charged with the crime.
Stoll was taken to the hospital in Dayton, but some days later he died. Adamson denied the charge and later appeared before Judge Berry. He said he had been up in Ohio and had no intention of running away. Bail was fixed at $2500 and the prisoner was put in the custody of the Sheriff.
