A NEWPORT SALOON KEEPER
Jacob Schickner, a well known saloon keeper at Fourth and York
streets in Newport committed suicide yesterday morning by hanging himself to a
bedpost at his home. He was discovered by his wife, who summoned assistance.
Captain Waters and Officer Donavin responded and cut Schickner down. Dr. Davis
was called, Schickner died soon after his arrival.
The deceased was 37 years old and leaves a widow and two children, Minnie, aged 11 years, and George, aged 13 years. Schickner came to Newport from Covington about seven years ago and opened a saloon at Fourth and York streets. In 1894 he with J N Hanley, opened a resort at Ft Thomas. Later the partnership was dissolved and Schickner built a roof garden at an expense of $870.
He prospered but on August 18, 1895, the building was destroyed by fire. It was only partially insured and Schickner's loss was $4000. He brooded over his loss and would stand or sit for hours, patiently gazing at space and oblivious to his surroundings. His wife and friends did all in their power to relieve him, but all to no avail.
Charles R Lansdale, a cigar manufacturer of Newport, would walk with him for hours. His condition rapidly grew worse and upon the advice of Dr. Davis, the attending, Mrs. Schickner made arrangements for treatment, but was persuaded from doing so by other relatives.
Mrs. Schickner was prostrated with grief of the tragic death of her husband. A brother of the deceased, William G Schickner, is a druggist at Eleventh and Greenup streets in Covington. Friends of the dead man say that it was his ambition to pay all his debts and it is said that he has done so, despite his heavy loss last summer.
