Jacob Hilsinger was born on March 21, 1826 in Heugelheim in the Pfalz and in his youth he learned the trade of a blacksmith. The confusion and restlessness of the year 1848 made him come to America when he was 22 years old, where he hoped to find a more peaceful and a more free home. He traveled over Havre and New York and arrived in the new world on June 1, 1848. From New York he traveled westward and arrived in Cincinnati on June 16, 1848.
Here the young man found work immediately in the airline factory of Raymond and Roberts on Main Street. His employers soon learned to esteem and value him and after five years he became a partner of the business known as Raymond Roberts & Co., later as Raymond, Hilsigner and Co. and before Hilsinger's death was known as Raymond, Hilsinger and Fetig.
For thirty years Hilsinger worked in this Company with great success. He enjoyed every where the greatest respect and because of his hard work and perseverance he was regarded highly in the business world. He died August 11, 1883. He left behind his widow, Margaretha, nee Freitag, with whom he lived since 1851 in happy marriage and a large circle of friends. All were saddened by his early death. Hilsinger was a member of the German Pioneer Club since July 1879. These members and also the Odd-Fellows and the APA paid him their last respect.
