Jack D Newman

Kentucky Post, Wednesday, 3 January 1951, page 1

"I'm heading for that spot. Wish me luck.." Those were the words Army Pfc Jack D Newman, 22, of 1012 Central avenue, Newport, wrote to his sister Mrs. May Herbert, Newport, last summer seven weeks before he was reported missing in action in Korea. This week the Department of Defense informed his father, Henry Newman, Heidelberg, Lee County, that the soldier actually was killed on Sept 26.

The telegram to the father was the first word the family had received concerning Pvt. Newman since they were informed he had been captured by the North Koreans last July 20. The latest message did not explain whether he had escaped and returned to duty before his death or whether he had been killed while being held prisoner.

A native of Heidelberg, Pvt. Newman had been living with a sister, Mrs. Florence Bowman at the Central avenue address, when he enlisted three years ago. Prior to that time he was an employee of the American Sheet Metal & Manufacturing Co Cincinnati. Before being sent to Korea, Pvt. Newman had been attached to a military police detachment near Tokyo Japan. Besides his father and two sisters, he leaves two other sisters, Mrs. Mary Lynch, Cincinnati and Mrs. Millard Anderson, Hazard, and a brother Robert, Cincinnati.
