Two northern Kentucky sailors were serving abroad the USS Princeton aircraft carrier sunk off the coast of the Philippines by the Japanese, their families were told Thursday. The men are Seaman First Class Bernard Moon, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Moon, Independence, and Seaman Second Class Irvin Fardo, 18, son of Mrs. Laura Fardo, Grants Lick. Seaman Fardo, an only son, has been serving on the Princeton for the past six months. A graduate of Campbell County High School, he was employed as a grocery clerk at Alexandria before joining the Navy.

Mr. and Mrs. Laurel Fardo, Alexandria, received a V-Mail letter Tuesday notifying them that their son, Seaman Second Class Irving L Fardo, 18, who was on the USS Princeton was safe. Seaman Fardo informed his parents that he was safe and well but unable to disclose his address.

A graduate of Campbell County High School, he was employed at the Wadsworth Watch Case Co. Dayton, before entering the service in March. He was assigned to the Princeton in May.
