DEATH UNDER THE WHEELS

Ira Shaw, aged 20, residing at 221 East Second street, was run over some time early yesterday morning by a freight train at the Thornton street crossing of the C & O Railroad in Bellevue. He was killed almost instantly, his body being badly mangled. About 3:30 am Charles Groserup, a driver for a Cincinnati dairy concern, was passing and heard moans. He made an investigation and discovered Shaw's body lying near the track. He called Fred Reneker and Officer William Smith, and Shaw was moved to Speers Hospital.

His right leg had been cut at the knee, his left leg at the hip and his right arm at the elbow. Dr. Senour put Shaw on the operating table in the hope of saving his life, but he died from the shock while an operation was being attempted. It is thought that Shaw, who had been visiting in Bellevue, decided to take a ride to Maysville and attempted to board a freight train that leaves Newport shortly after midnight. There were no witnesses to the accident, but it is thought that he was jolted from one of the cars and fell under the wheels.

Coroner Digby was notified and held an inquest, after which the body was removed to Smith's morgue. The funeral will take place at 2 pm tomorrow, with services at the family residence.
