First Horseless Carriage

NEWPORT
Mr. F C Miller's new automobile made its appearance on York
street yesterday and as it was the first time a horseless carriage had been seen
in Newport, the vehicle attracted a great deal of attention.
It is difference from most of the carriages seen in the East, and operated by either gasoline or storage batteries, in that the motive power is steam generated by burning gasoline. A very compact boiler and engine is located under the seat and the power from the engine is transmitted to the axles by a sprocket chain similar to that used on bicycles.
When in operation a slight jet of steam is exhausted, but aside from this there is no smoke, noise or anything to indicated from what source the motive power is derived.
Mr. Miller had the carriage built in the East under his directions at a cost of $700.
