Hiram Luman

Kentucky Post, Thursday, 7 September 1905, page 5

Dayton Ky. friends are much interested in the fate of Dr. Charles Beach, who shot and killed Hiram Luman, a star route mail carrier tow months ago. Beach formerly lived in Dayton working as a street car conductor. Later he went to Washington DC studied medicine, practiced his profession, made some money, and purchased Esculapia Springs, not far from Vanceburg. He ran the place as a summer resort and was successful.

Two months ago he became involved in an altercation with Luman and killed him. Beach claimed self defense, while those with Luman claimed it was a cold blooded murder. Beach was released on $1000 bail at the time. Since then the Lewis County Grand Jury has indicted him for murder and efforts are being made to arrest him, as a murder charge is not a bailable offense.

After the shooting Beach went to New York but returned the other day and had a consultation with his attorneys at Vanceburg. Then he left again. Feeling runs high in Vanceburg and it is not improbable there would be an outbreak if Beach were lodged in jail there.
