Harry J Venard, 34, one of the most prominent young men of Campbell co. died Thursday afternoon at his home 209 Joyce av. Newport, following a lingering illness. He had been confined to his home the past two months. His wife also has been ill, but is recovering. Venard was a lifelong resident of Newport and a World War veteran. He was widely known in amateur theatricals, having taken part in many performances in and around Newport. He was prominently indentified in a number of lodges and organization.
He was the son of Sergt. Henry Venard of the Newport Police Department. He had been connected with the Western and Southern Life Insurance Co. as special Campbell co. representative the past five years. Being an overseas veteran Venard was affliliated with James Wallace Costigan Post, American Legion of Newport. He had held a number of offices in the Legion and at the time of his death was historian and a member of the Firing Squad of the post.
Venard also was Esteemed Loyal Knight of the Newport Lodge of Elks; chef de gare of the Forty and Eight; vice president of the Campbell County Young Men's Democratic Club and that organization's first president; a member of the Newport Aerie of Eagles and a member of the Holy Name Society of St Theresa Church, Southgate. For a number of years Venard served as secretary of the Democratic Campaign Committee in Campbell co.
Besides his widow, Gertrude Gleason Venard, the is survived by a son, Robert; parents, Sergt. and Mrs. Henry Venard; two sister, Mrs. Marie Bocklage and Mrs. Geneva Kinley and a brother, Dan Venard. The remains will be at the William C Betz funeral home, 23 E Sixth st. Newport, until Saturday at 3 pm, when they will be taken to the Newport Lodge of Elks Hall, York st. to lie in state until Saturday at 8 pm.
Elk services will be held at that time after which Venard's body will be removed to his home. Newport Aerie of Eagles will hold their services Sunday night at the home. Members of the Holy Name Society of St Theresa Church will meet Sunday at 8 pm at the school and proceed in a body in the home to hold their services. The American Legion and the Forty and Eight will attend the funeral in a body and hold their services at the grave. The firing squad of the American Legion will form a guard of honor at Elks Hall and will accompany the body to the grave and fire a salute.
Funeral services are to be held Monday, with a requiem high mass at 9 am at St Theresa Church. Burial will be in St Stephen Cemetery, Ft Thomas.
