Corporal John Heinrich Long, also known as Henry Ling was born 8 July 1827 in Hesse Cassel, Germany. He immigrated to the United States leaving Le Havre, France and arriving 22 Aug 1845 in New York City. He married Anna Catherina Mueller in 1851 in New York City and moved to Newport Ky. by 1855. While living in New York City they were members of the First German Church on Rivington Street, as the first two children were christened there.

He enlisted in the Civil War as a Corporal on 15 Oct 1861 in Newport and trained at Camp Pope Ky. which is near New Haven, in Co I 15th Infantry. The 15th Infantry Regiment was constituted 4 May 1861, organized at Newport Barracks, Kentucky, and fought in the Civil War’s Western Theater participating in the Battles of Shiloh, Stone’s River, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, and the Atlanta Campaign.

Henry was mustered out in Louisville Ky on 14 Jan 1865. Corporal Ling's pension records indicate he was pensioned and received $4 a month. He was at the Battle of Perryville Ky. on Oct 8, 1862 and suffered a serious wound from a lead ball that penetrated the facial bone along the right side of his nose. Due to this wound and the subsequent health problems, Henry requested a pension increase and applied for an "Invalid Pension" disabled on July 1, 1879. The pension increase documents included testimony from Corporal Ling and two witnesses.

A health statement from a Medical examiner of the US Bureau of Pensions, dated July 14, 1890, affirms that "he has attended to Henry Ling for thirty days and found he was suffering from inflammatory rheumatism and that Mr. Ling is bedridden. He had palsy and a constant nasal infection due to the gunshot wound to the right side of his face. He was totally disabled needs constant attention of a nurse."

Henry died 28 June 1895 at his home on Brighton and Patterson in Newport. The physician's certificate listed the cause of death as heart failure. He was buried in Evergreen Cemetery.

After his death Anna requested a widow's pension and received $12 a month until her death in 1900.
