ATTACKED-Trouble that caused much excitement and came near resulting in fatalities broke loose in the mess hall at Ft Thomas Monday night, when Henry Johnson, First Sergeant of Company I, Third Infantry, was attacked by Private Jones of the same company. At the conclusion of the difficulty, both men were in the hospital at the fort.
A dispute arose when Johnson ordered Jones, who was detained as a waiter at the mess, to bring him some meat. Jones, it is alleged made an insolent reply, and noting that Jones had been drinking, Johnson ordered another Sergeant at the table to take him to the guardhouse. At this Jones caught up a heavy cup and with a powerful blow broke it over Johnson's head. Johnson was laid out, but before Jones could follow up his attack, his arms were pinioned by his comrades and he was dragged to the guardhouse.
Here Jones, who seemed bent on trouble, it is alleged, savagely attacked the sentinel, but was laid out with a blow from the butt end of the sentinel's gun. Jones was then rushed to the hospital where Surgeon Vitou dressed his wounds. After attending Johnson, who had sustained a deep gash four inches long from the top of the forehead to the bridge of his nose. Both men will recover. Jones was locked up in the guardhouse after the melee. Johnson was formerly Regimental Sergeant of the Second Infantry.
