NNEW COMMANDER-Col. Harry Leland Haskell is to be the new commander of the Third Infantry, according to a telegram received at Ft Thomas Sunday. He is at present stationed at Ft Bliss Tex. and will arrive within a week at Ft Thomas.  Army men, who have been with Col. Haskell in may campaigns with the Indians and in the Civil War and in Spanish American War, tell glowing stories of his bravery. Col. Haskell was in command of the Twelfth at Santiago. He took part in the Philippine campaign and fought Sitting Bull in the Sioux country in 1890 and was part of Gen. O O Howard's command that halted Chief Joseph during the uprising of the Nez Perce Indians in 1882. He had been wounded several times.

Col. Harry L Haskell has received his commission as Brigadier General and his retirement papers from Washington. He will turn over the command of the post to Major William L Buck, Third Infantry. His successor has not been appointed, but the new commander of the Third Infantry will probably be one of the following Lieutenant Colonels: George A Cornish, Twenty-sixth Infantry; Charles A Williams, Twenty-eighth Infantry, and Thomas C Woodbury, Seventeenth Infantry.

Colonel Haskell having been retired, Major William L Buck is in temporary command of the post. General and Mrs. Haskell will make their future home in Southern California, leaving in about three weeks.

General Harry L Haskell and Mrs. Haskell will leave Ft Thomas Thursday for Southern California where they will in future, reside permanently. On Wednesday evening the General and Mrs. Haskell will be given a farewell reception at the post in which all the officers and ladies of the garrison will participate.

Gen. Harry Leland Haskell, distinguished army officer, is no more. His death came yesterday at shortly after noon at his home, on the northwest corner or Fifth and Palm streets. Gen. Haskell had seen forty years of service to his country. He enlisted as a volunteer in the Civil war and was retired at Fort Thomas, Ky., four years ago. Born in Clinton, Maine, Sept. 27, 1840. Gen. Haskell first had military service in 1860. He enlisted in a regiment at Troy, N.Y.; one of the first to go to the front. Both he and President McKinley served in Gen. Hancock's corps. The letter was adjutant of a division and the former of the first two brigades, formed by himself.

After the war Gen. Haskell was commissioned a second lieutenant in the regular army by Gen. Grant. For thirty-six years he served In the Twelfth Infantry, finally becoming a lieutenant-colonel in it. His regiment fought the Apaches in Arizona and the Indians of Idaho, Montana and the Dakotas, and participated in the capture and killing of Sitting Bull.

He was captain In the Twelfth when it went to Cuba during the Spanish-American war. He was commander of a battalion at the sharp of El Caney. Maj. Gen. John C. Breakenridge, inspector-general during the campaign, termed Capt. Haskell's conduct at that charge as heroic. Gen. Haskell served twice in the Philippines. To 1903, he was made brigadier-general, placed in command of Fort Thomas, KY, and soon after retired. Than he and his wife came to San Diego. The funeral will be held from the residence, when the Rev. Charles L. Barnes of St. Paul's returns. The body will be buried at San Francisco by the side of Mrs. Haskell's parents.

HASKELL-In this city, October 25. 1908, General Harry Leland Haskell, husband of Mary F. Haskell of this city, a native of Clinton, Maine, age dated 68 years. Friends are invited to attend the funeral services at the residence, northwest corner Fifth and Palm streets, at 2 o'clock P.M. tomorrow (Wednesday). Rev. C. L. Barnes will officiate. Interment at San Francisco, Cal.
