OLD PHYSICIAN DEAD
Dr. Henry C Gunkel, one of the oldest practitioners of medicine in Kentucky and the most widely known in the northern part of the state, died last night at his home, 11 East Sixth street, Newport, as the result of apoplexy sustained Saturday night. Dr. Rusell, surgeon of the Big Four Railroad and Dr. Keeney were called.
Dr. Gunkel was born September 5, 1825 in Sondershauser, Schwarzburg, Germany, where he graduated as a doctor. he came to the United States in 1854 and also graduated in the Eclectic School at Cincinnati. For 35 years he enjoyed a large and lucrative practice in Newport. He was a charter member of the German Pioneers and was a member of the Waterworks Commission that gave Newport its present waterworks.
His wife died in 1893 and he leaves three children, Attorney Harry Gunkel, F C Gunkel and Mrs. Louise Rainey.
