DR. HENRI GUNKEL

President of the First National Bank-Newport Ky. Mr. Gunkel was born in Toba, a little village in Germany, on the 5th of September 1825.  He migrated to America in 1850 and resided here for two years; then he returned to his old home.  In 1853 he came back to the United States and settled in Newport Ky. in June of the same year, where he has since resided.

He was educated in Germany and when he started in his profession he was not possessed of a single dollar that he could call his own. By his close attention to business, industry and perseverance he has accumulated about $100,000.  He has been President of the bank for the past four years and commands the largest practice of any physician in Northern Kentucky. He has a wife and five children-three sons and two daughters.  Two of his sons are regular practicing physicians. He is generous and very charitable. His early life was one of hardship and trouble, the incidents of which would fill a history.

HOW A RECONCILIATION HAPPENED-Dr. Henry Gunkel, ex-President of the defunct (First National) bank, denied positively and emphatically the story that he was willing to sign the note to borrow sufficient money to temporarily relieve its embarrassment, and that he was about to sign when his pen was wrested from him by his son Dr. Charles Gunkel and his daughter, Dr. Emma Gunkel.

"That is foolish talk" Dr. Gunkel said, "Why I knew that three times $50,000 would not save the bank and knowing this I would have been a fool to sign a note that would only have postponed the inevitable collapse.  My son or my daughter could not have influenced me had I thought the bank could be saved with the loan from the Covington bankers, but I knew it was not enough and that it was all that could be borrowed."

Newport Briefs

At the meeting of the German Pioneer Society last night, Secretary Staudtmeister reported that looking over the records of the organization, he discovered that Dr. Henry Gunkel is the only living charter member.  The charter of the society was secured May 25, 1877, and the records show that Dr. Gunkel has always been a member in good standing and that he has always manifested great interest in the society. He is 83 years of age, having been born in Germany in 1825.  He came to America in 1845.  It was voted to send a copy of the records to the family of Dr. Gunkel with an expression of pride in having him for a member.
