Hazel Leah Braun

Hazel Braun, Highland Heights, Ky. has a totally different problem. She catches clams. "I cast out 25 feet from shore, my line gave a hard pull and I jerked, setting the hook. I thought I had a nice sized fish from the weight; my catch turned out to be a large mussel or clam. My bait and hook were in the clam's shell and I had to use a screw driver to pry open the shell. Is this unusual or do clams bit on night crawlers?" she asks. She was fishing at Butler State Park.

Hazel L "Sparky" Braun, 67, manager of Mountain Valley Water Co. of Cincinnati for about 28 years, died Monday at her Highland Heights home. For several years before joining the firm, Miss Braun owned a grocery at Ninth and York streets, Newport, according to her brother Charles of Alexandria.

A graduate of Newport High School, she was a tough competitor in basketball, softball, badminton and tennis. The Girl's Athletic Association awarded her the "N" ring for outstanding athlete of 1947. "She always played basketball with me and the other fellows on Putnam Street, where we grew up. We would subject her to some pretty tough games. I always thought maybe that's how she got to be so good," he said.
