With an estimated field of 30 or more candidates expected to weigh into Newport's city commissioners primary election, Harry Stuart, 1704 Monmouth street, became the first to make his formal declaration Monday. Mr. Stuart, a veteran of World War I, attended the University of Kentucky and later served 12 years s a member of the Campbell County road patrol system.
He is now a deputy sheriff. He is a member of James Wallace Costigan Post, American Legion, the South Newport Boosters Club and various civic, fraternal and social organizations. In his formal statement, Mr. Stuart said:
"If elected as a city commissioner, I will enter office with an open mind as to the problems which confront our city. I offer no criticism of past administrations. I am a supporter of a recreational program which will provide play areas for our children. Newport is now in the process of redevelopment. Our flood projection project will attract new industry and additional home owners. I assure the citizens I will be the first to sponsor any project that will benefit our community and at the lowest cost to the taxpayers."
