Bathiany has gained the shoulder straps by strict application to military duty and a desire to succeed. He enlisted in the Second Kentucky at the breaking out of the Spanish War and when this regiment of volunteers was mustered out, he re-enlisted.

He was made Sergeant of Company D, First Regular Infantry, and then decided to try for a commission. He passed the examination successfully and got his papers as Second Lieutenant while in the Philippines.
