Last Monday night Ms. Gottlieb Volkey, a married woman, left the residence of her sister, Mrs. Fisher, on Liberty street, near Patterson, to go to her home in Finchtown, a suburb of Newport, on the Licking River. She was accompanied by a little son of Mrs. Fisher, but when they got about half way to Finchtown, at her request, the boy started back, Mrs. Volkey remarking that she could go the balance of the distance alone.
Just as she reached the point where the Short Line Railroad crosses the Licking pike, a man attacked her and attempted to outrage her person. Mrs. Volkey stoutly resisted teh villain and shouted as loud as she could for help. None came, however, and the scoundrel finding that he could not accomplish his purpose with safety to himself, knocked Mrs. Volkey down and giving her three or four kicks in the side with his heavy boots, disappeared.
The poor woman laid in an insensible condition on the ground for several hours, but finally recovered sufficient strength to walk home, and she has since been confined to her bed from the effects of her injuries, which are of the most serious nature and may prove fatal.
