Gosney One-Room Schoolhouse

This log cabin was originally on a 16 acre site on Clay Ridge Road in Grant's Lick.  It was moved to the campus of Northern Kentucky University in June of 1982.

Benjamin Gosney, with his brothers, Frederick and William, his sister, Elizabeth and his second wife's parents, John and Margaret Colvin, settled in southern Campbell County around 1790.  John Gosney, a son of Benjamin married Isabelle Yelton.  Their first child, Benjamin Coleman Gosney born in 1821, married Nancy M Bryan, the daughter of Hampton, great-granddaughter of Mary Boone Bryan.

Benjamin Coleman Gosney acquired part of his father's interest in his grandfather's estate in 1849.  The 150 acres acquired came from property once belonging to General James Taylor.

On this site, Benjamin Coleman built his own log home, a log school known as the Gosney School, later known as the Clay Ridge Elementary School, and log homes for his family.   His son, Columbus H "Lum" was born in 1859 and in 1885 Lum sold his interest in this cabin to his brother-in-law Phillip Pelley, who in turn transferred  possession to Lum's brother Samuel Worth Gosney in 1911.  The cabin was acquired from Samuel by Andrew Thurner, who was with Alexandria Bank.  It was moved to Alexandria and for a time was at the corner of Main and U.S. 27.

In 1978 the cabin was donated and moved to A J Jolly Park as the cornerstone of a Heritage Village that did not develop.  In 1982, it was moved to Northern Kentucky University where it was restored.
