Initial step toward a commission in the Army Air Corps was made by Giles J McCarthy, son of Mr. and Mrs. J A McCarthy, South Ft Mitchell, who started his pilot training course at the Pine Bluff School of Aviation, Pine Bluff, Ark. Fifth Corps Area Headquarters, Ft Hayes O. disclosed Thursday.

Upon graduation from the 30 week flight training, Mr. McCarthy will receive a commission of second lieutenant in the Army Air Corps reserve to go on immediate active duty at a salary of $245 a month plus $500 yearly bonus. McCarthy is a graduate of Covington Latin School and the University of Ottawa, Canada, where he received a bachelor of arts degree in psychology. While at the Canadian school he won the intercollegiate debating championship of the dominion in 1940. Before enlisting in the Aviation Cadets he taught school in Covington.

Lieut. Giles J McCarthy has been graduated from the US Army Air Corps Navigation School at Kelly Field, Tex. He took a flight training course at Pine Bluff, Ark. Thereafter he was in training for 10 weeks at Ellington Field. He graduated from the Air Corps School with the highest average of his class of 46 officers. He now is located in Louisiana. He enlisted in the army in January 1941.

Lt. Giles McCarthy, 25, husband of Mary Ragan McCarthy, of Cold Spring Ky. and son of Mrs. Jennie McCarthy, of Ft Mitchell, has been missing in action over Germany since Nov 30, his family has been informed. Lt. McCarthy, navigator on a Flying Fortress based in England, has been overseas since June. Previously he served with the AAF in Africa and Italy and after returning to the states for several months was sent over again.

The lieutenant, father of a two week old son, has been in the AAF since April 1941.
