ANOTHER SKELETON FOUND: Workmen Turn Up the Remains of General Tibbatts, an English Officer

Workmen engaged in excavating on Taylor street, in Newport yesterday, unearthed a skeleton.  A portion of the casket was in a fair state of preservation, while one of the shoes was as good as new.  The skeleton proved to be that of General John? W Tibbatts, who was a General in the English army.  A plate was found bearing this inscription: "George W Tibbatts, born 1758."  He was buried in an English army uniform and the buttons bore the English coat of arms and were of brass and were not rusted.  There were also English coins in the grave.

This makes about forty skeletons that have been unearthed at the same place.  General Tibbatts was the grandfather of Rev John Tibbatts, an evangelist and was buried in the spot in the year 1799.
