Receiving ward first from the Navy Department and then from a shipmate of her son, Mrs. Jessie Pickens learned that her son, Seaman George S Pickens of 218 Lewis street, Newport, was wounded in action for the second time.

In November 1943, Seaman Pickens received the Purple Heart for his participation in the Battle of Wake Island. Now in a Pearl Harbor Naval Hospital, Seaman Pickens has a broken arm, leg and finger, according to his buddy's story.

G S Pickens, gunner's mate third class, husband of Mrs. Edna Pickens of 218 Miller street, Cold Spring, recently was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds received in action against the Japanese in the South Pacific.

Presentation of the medal was made by Capt. W W Hargrave, commanding officer of the largest Naval hospital in the Pacific Ocean area, where the Kentuckian is recuperating.
