Cincinnati Post, Friday, 15 July 1898, page 5

George Mitchell, Company H, Eighth Regiment United States Volunteers, was drowned in the river at Ft Thomas Thursday evening. Major Rosenberg, on account of the warm weather, had given the company commanders permission to allow the men to go bathing and Mitchell's company was one of the first on the banks.

Mitchell got beyond his depth and with a cry threw up his hands and sank. A number of his comrades swam to his aid, but could do nothing for him. The body was recovered.

DEATH AGAIN VISITS FT THOMAS

Nor was the hospital at the post the only place which the angel of death hovered over yesterday.  it invade the camp of the Eighth Regiment CSV just beyond the fort, and one of the members of that regiment was reported drowned last night.

It being a very hot afternoon, Major Rosenberg instructed the company commanders to allow the men to go to the river to bathe, and Company H was one of the first to reach the banks.  George Mitchell, a member of the company, got beyond his depth and with a sudden cry, threw up both hands and sand from sight.

A number of his comrades swam to his assistance, but could do nothing to aid him. A search for his body was then commenced, but at a late hour last evening it had not been recovered. Mitchell was from Danville Ky. and leaves an aged mother.
