Survivors of the Fifty-Third Kentucky Regiment, Civil War Veterans, met at Fourth and York sts. Newport, Tuesday evening, in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of their mustering out by Gen U S Grant.

Newport member of the regiment include George Creighton, William Woodard, Charles Solar and Joseph Sproats.

George A Creighton, pioneer resident of Newport, died Thursday night at his home, 526 E Sixth st. Newport, following a protracted illness. To Creighton goes the honor of organizing the first baseball team in Kentucky. This team was organized in the late 50s and was known as the Kentucky Holts. The Holt team went thru two season without a defeat. Only one other member of the original team in alive.

Creighton for years was custodian of the Campbell co. Courthouse in Newport and later was a police officer in Newport. A widow and several sons, one of whom, George Jr. is general freight agent for the L&N RR at Montgomery Ala. The funeral arrangements have not been completed.

The funeral of George Creighton Sr. whose death occurred Friday was held Monday afternoon with services in the late home, 526 E Fourth st. Newport. The body was interred in Evergreen Cemetery.
