POLICE CHIEF IS CRASH VICTIM
George T Benz, 61, Campbell County Police Chief was killed and
August Utendorfer, 67, Campbell County Juvenile Probation Officer, died 30
minutes later at St Elizabeth Hospital, Covington, late yesterday after the
automobile in which they were riding collided with a large milk truck on Ky. 17
near Nicholson Ky.
The two victims were returning from the Greendale House of Reform after taking a Campbell County juvenile there. Initial reports obtained by Kenton County police who investigated the accident, indicated that Benz was driving the car when the accident occurred. Kenton County police said the milk truck was driven by Robert Wilson Vatter, 25, Butler Ky. and that the truck was owned by L P Vastine, Butler dairyman.
Vatter told Kenton County police that the death car crashed into the truck broadsides after it had skidded on two wheels on the wrong side of the highway. Police ascertained that Benz apparently lost control of the car, skidded off the highway, then in trying to right the vehicle, skidded more than 75 feet sideways and hit the milk truck.
Chief Benz was appointed a Campbell County patrolman in 1938 by Judge Otis W Bertelsman of Campbell County Court. He received the Chief's appointment in 1944. He lived at 315 Division St. Bellevue. Utendorfer lived at 406 E Fifth St. Newport. He was appointed a Campbell County Patrolman in 1938 and was named Campbell County Juvenile Probation Officer in 1944by Judge Bertelsman.
