George Baron, formerly of 416 E Fourth st. Newport, now a US Soldier stationed at Long Island NY, tells a story of how German spies, tried to poison American troops and nearly succeeded in a letter to Covington friends. Baron said that relatives of the Sammies frequently sent cakes and pastries to the camp. Alleged German spies, he said, broke open the packages and inserted poison in the pastry.

Army physicians cured the Sammies, however, but officers issued an order preventing relatives or friends sending food to the soldiers.
