George Easton

Judge Hodge in the Newport Circuit Court Saturday morning, issued an order of abatement closing the Tuxedo poolrooms at Eleventh and Brighton streets, Newport. George Easton, one of the clerks, was indicted by the grand jury for operating a pool room.
It appeared as a grand jury joke as everybody knew John J Ryan was the owner of the room. The court's order is as follows:
"The defendant has pleaded guilty of maintaining a public nuisance and the Court is asked to fix his punishment at a fine of $500. From the evidence it appears this poolroom commenced in December 1902, and the matter has been finally brought to the court for determination. The most important matter is the present necessity of some action or step looking to the discontinuance of defendant's enterprise. It is therefore ordered, that the defendant, George Easton and all others associated with him, in and about carrying on and operating and assembling and congregating in the poolroom upon the premises known as Tuxedo Garden, do now desist, discontinue and cease and stop the said operation.

The order follows the action of George Easton Friday in pleading guilty to operating a poolroom. John P Newman, Prosecuting Attorney, suggested a $500 fine for him.

Now that Johnny Ryan has been forced to close up his poolroom at Newport, there is very little chance of his opening the Newport track.
