A few months ago, when Newport became too warm to hold traitor Judge A Boyd, who had long been considered one of the bitterest rebels in the State, took his department from Newport and it was thought had gone to Dixie. Yesterday, he turned up in Newport. Some say he returned for the purpose of taking the oath of allegiance and giving bonds for his future good behavior.
If such were his intentions he was too slow in carrying them out, for he had not been in town more than an hour before Provost Marshal got wind of his presence and ordered his arrest. The Judge made a slight show of resistance. He drew a pistol and while attempting to cock it, the weapon prematurely discharged the ball entering the wall. The officers secured him and he is now confined in the Newport Barracks. He will be sent to Camp Chase.
