ASKED SISTER TO PRAY
Frank Vogel, 34, a machinist, residing at 1030 York street,
Newport, conscience stricken because he believed that his conduct toward his
wife caused her to take her life, committed suicide last night at his home by
taking carbolic acid. Death ensued 20 minutes after physicians had arrived at
his bedside. Vogel's tragic life story is best told in the broken sentences of a
note that he left, telling why he had taken his life.
"I forgive all if I have not been properly informed. I have learned that my life has not been right. I knew that I was rough, but I tried to be good. If I failed to the extent of causing my wife to take her life, it is only right that I should pay the price. I loved her since I was 19 years of age and I worked hard for a home and to overcome some of my faults, but by hard work, for from the time I was 2 years old I was mean, so I am told. Why, I do not know, Fanny and I were happy most of the time and always loved each other.
Bury me alongside of Fanny and if they won't do it, have her taken up and bury us together. Save my money for Clifford. God take care of Clifford and of pa and ma and the bad luck turn in our family. Good by to all, for I acknowledge before God if i was mean, I did not mean to be. Albert, give pa what money you can with it comes in and let him have it until Clifford needs it. Don't forget my tools at Lebanon. I want Jake to have them. I would like to be buried a Mason. See George Maser in Ludlow. I think they will refuse me on account of my death."
Vogel has been despondent since his wife committed suicide near Shelbyville, Ind. last month. Last night he went out purchased the carbolic acid, returned home and went to the third floor. He came down to the second floor where his sister was and asked her to pray for him. While she was praying she noticed that her brother became suddenly very ill and seemed to be in great pain.
Vogel's wife was a Miss Fanny North and the family is well and favorably known in Campbell County. He leaves one child, the boy whom he mentions in his letter.
